NEW YORK CITY - There is no
shortage of drama in this obsession called “March Madness.” Part of the madness
was negotiated on Thursday. Two and a half games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
for the Atlantic Ten, then onto the subway back to Manhattan and the Big East
to catch the final half of Louisville-Villanova followed by the ’holy war’ of
Notre Dame-Marquette.
Drama began early in the final seconds of the A-10 opener
with Richmond and Charlotte. As the day played out there wasn’t anything to
match that finish. Still, there were moments which remain imbedded in our
consciousness. As Louisville’s Russ Smith’s heartfelt sentiments about the
recent passing of his high school coach, the legendary Jack Curran. Not to
mention the intensity of Notre Dame-Marquette as the Irish want to end their
Big East days by getting to Saturday night.
An added feature of March Madness is the background. The
fans, the bands, cheerleaders and mascots. And a former president who took in
the action at MSG. Though Butler’s cheer group informed me their current
bulldog mascot “Blue” is going into retirement. Quite a record for “Blue,” who
was on hand for two NCAA championship appearances. It’s all a part of March
Madness and to think, there is still so much more to come. Enjoy!
